Calculation of solidification phenomena with CFDRC
My name is Josep Maria Vilarrasa Diaz, studying mechanical engineering at the unversity of of Girona.
Thanks to the DAAD, I visited the IMET from July to September 2003.
During my visit at IMET, I learned to use CFDRC based on the task to calculate
solidification phenomena.
My report can be found here (
MS-Word File,
PDF File).
I can also provide a step-by-step tutorial for calculating a simple solidification problem with
CFDRC (
PDF).
The material property data used for the calculations are provided here:
Using that temperature dependent material properties,
we studied the solidification of iron and aluminium in a quadratic (200x200mm) crucible made
of alumina (low heat conductivity) or metal (high conductivity).
We did a 2-D calculation and we were calculating
only the upper right 25%,
an assumption which is correct for the calculations without fluid flow.
We studied the following cases:
- Aluminium with aluminium crucible and no fluid flow effects.
- Aluminium with alumina (Al2O3) crucible and no fluid flow effects
Solidification time 150s, temperature map depending on time
800x600 AVI Video, 32MB.
- Iron with iron crucible and no fluid flow effects
- Iron with alumina (Al2O3) crucible and no fluid flow effects
Solidification time 660s, liquid fraction map depending on time
1024x768 AVI Video, 37MB,
temperature map depending on time
1024x768 AVI Video, 33MB.
- Iron with alumina (Al2O3) crucible and including natural convection (fluid flow) effects:
Solidification time 450s, liquid fraction map depending on time
1024x768 AVI Video, 55MB,
temperature map depending on time
1024x768 AVI Video, 146MB
and finally, temperature and flow field:
.
For the continuation of this work, the flow calculations can be made more physical and shrinkage
effects may be considered.
